2023 Shanghai Summer School - Diplomats' Program
The “Shanghai Summer School—The Diplomats' Program” has been successfully held for 12 years since 2011. This program is jointly sponsored by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, Foreign Affairs Office of Shanghai Municipal Government, and organized by East China Normal University. So far nearly 600 officials from over 60 countries’ consulates in Shanghai have participated in this program. It has won a great fame among the consulate cohort. In 2023, we have altogether 30 officials from 21 countries' consulates in Shanghai to participate the program. This year's program integrated rich "Shanghai-style elements", and launched a series of brand-new activities, such as expert lectures on Shanghai's historical changes, China's green development concepts, and experiencing Intangible Cultural Heritage in summer customs, field trip to Chongming Island. The diplomats also witnessed the exciting moment when our school's international student team won first place in the 13th Shanghai Universities International Students Dragon Boat Race, winning for the fifth time. While learning Chinese, diplomats further understood China's history, customs, and contemporary social development. The Diplomat Program is a distinguished and influential project within the Shanghai Summer School. It provides a high-quality platform for language learning and cultural exchange for diplomats from various consulates in Shanghai. It plays a significant role in promoting friendly exchanges between Chinese and foreign people. Let's meet again next year!

1 HERRERA It is a great honor for me to speak before you this morning and share my experiences studying basic Chinese here at East China Normal University, ECNU. But before I go any further, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to East China Normal University for the opportunity to take basic Mandarin classes at your green and welcoming campus. ECNU’s Diplomats’ Mandarin language program provides the right balance of classroom learning and extracurricular activities that enable non-Chinese speakers like myself to develop basic Chinese language skills, to be built upon through practice, while also offering out of classroom activities that broaden understanding and deepen appreciation of Chinese culture, history and people. The Chinese language skills that me and my Philippine Consulate General colleagues have acquired under your program has had a very positive impact on our daily life living in Shanghai and also in the conduct of our work at the office, especially when it comes to interviewing Chinese visa applicants, as can be attested to by my colleagues from the Philippine Consulate General. I will truly miss attending the classes here, especially the Saturday class. It is such a rejuvenating experience to once again be on campus among students and attend classes here as I am reminded of my university days long ago and I am able to relive many of the emotions I experienced when I was once a young person attending university. There is only one thing I wish could have been different. I wish that my office were not so busy, making attending the Wednesday evening classes for me almost impossible, thus I missed out on several lessons which gladly I am able to review through the regular sending of the lessons to our WeChat group chat by Laoshi. I wish to express my gratitude and appreciation to Laoshi Sonny for taking care of the level 1 class. I can imagine that it is not an easy job giving Chinese lessons from 6pm-9pm Wednesdays and to give up a substantial portion of your weekend during the Saturday classes. I wish you all the best in your future advanced studies at university and in your career. Likewise, I wish my fellow classmates much success and enriching experiences during their time here in Shanghai. Maybe our paths will cross again one day. But until that day, hou hui you qi!
