Shanghai Summer School (3S) 2023 was held as scheduled. The Africa program this year was conducted online from July 3 to July 28, and a total of 17 students from Botswana, Congo Brazzaville, Kenya, Tunisia, Madagascar, South Africa, Burkina Faso and other countries joined the program. The Asia program was held on site from July 30th to August 6th. Seventeen students from six countries, including Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Brunei, and Israel, attended the summer school on the campus of Shanghai Normal University. As the first on-site summer school after the pandemic, this program gave participants a chance not only to take Chinese listening, speaking, reading and writing courses like the online program, but also to see the city of Shanghai, to experience Chinese culture in person, such as trying shadow puppet making, practicing calligraphy and Taiji, even they can try wrapping Xiaolongbao with their own hands, which deepens their understanding of Chinese culture in a series of cultural practice activities. During the field visit, the students visited the Bund and Yu Garden, which were the symbols of Shanghai, the ancient town of Nanxiang and the site of Guangfulin, the Wukang Building and Hengfu Scenic Area, witnessed the vigorous development of Lingang New Area, and had a comprehensive understanding of Shanghai's past, present and future. This program serves as a bridge for degree-seeking international students with the university, and has profound significance in enriching diverse campus cultures and enhancing the ability of the university to operate internationally. At the same time, the success of this program, acting as the icon of the city, further contributes to the internationalization of education in Shanghai and builds an educational and cultural exchange platform between Asian and African countries and Shanghai, by attracting outstanding and high-level talents to experience China and study in Shanghai.
